"Physical education is for every youngster, to help them learn about themselves, learn about their bodies, and learn ways to become physically active." - George Graham
At St. Ignatius, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in
promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. At St Ignatius Catholic Primary School, our curriculum is designed with a clear intent to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve to their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect, as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport and a range of sporting co-curricular clubs. Through positive experiences of PE at school, we aim to foster a life-long love of sport and physical activity. This is a vision that we share with our coach from PSD who helps us to deliver PE lessons and after school clubs.
Our Curriculum
At St. Ignatius, we offer the children a wide range of sporting activities during their PE lessons. In EYFS, we develop the children’s fundamental movement and ball skills. These are then built on in Key Stage 1 as we begin to add in some net and wall, striking and fielding and target games.
In Key Stage 2, these skills are built upon once again, as the children will participate in sports such as netball, rounders and tennis.
Gymnastics and dance are taught throughout the school and children in Key Stage 2 have swimming lessons for 2 terms (the Summer Term of Year 4 and the Autumn Term of Year 5). You can find a curriculum overview below.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
At St Ignatius, we are proud of the extra sporting opportunities we can offer to our children. We offer a range of after school clubs (for example multi-sports, hockey, athletics and tag rugby) that are delivered by our coach from PSD. We also have external coaches who deliver Gymnastics (Pinks), Cheerleading (Pinks), Judo (CoreJudo), Football (JA Sports), Netball (JA Sports) and Dance (Holly’s School of Dance).
Children also have the opportunity to take part in competitions both within school and between other schools. We enter a wide range of competitions (including cross country, indoor sports hall, netball and hockey) that are run by both Active Surrey and the Surrey Sports Partnership.
We have a Year 5 & 6 boys football team, a Year 5 & 6 girls football team, a Year 5 & 6 girls netball team and a Year 3 & 4 boys football team who all take part in weekly training sessions as well as league matches against other local schools.
We also have a Sports Day in the summer term, where the children take part in a variety of running races and a carousel of sporting activities. In KS2 the children earn points for their class and at the end of Sports Day the points are tallied up and we have a winning class.
