Subject Vision Statement

"Physical education is for every youngster, to help them learn about themselves, learn about their bodies, and learn ways to become physically active."

George Graham

At St. Ignatius, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve to their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect, as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport. Through a positive experiences of PE at school, we aim foster a life-long love of sport and physical activity. This is a vision that we share with our coach from PSD who helps us to deliver PE lessons and after school clubs.

Our Curriculum

At St. Ignatius, we offer the children a wide range of sporting activities during their PE lessons. In EYFS, we develop the children’s fundamental movement and ball skills. These are then built on in Key Stage 1 as we begin to add in some net and wall, striking and fielding and target games.

In Key Stage 2, these skills are built upon once again, as the children will participate in sports such as netball, rounders and tennis.

Gymnastics and dance are taught throughout the school and children in Key Stage 2 participate in Yoga for half a term. You can find a curriculum overview towards the bottom of this page as well as a progression of skills document, which will show you how the children’s skills will be built upon year after year (swimming is not taking place currently due to COVID restrictions).

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

At St Ignatius, we are proud of the extra sporting opportunities we can offer to our children (all of our extra-curricular opportunities are currently subject to COVID restrictions).

We offer a range of after school clubs (for example multi-sports, football, netball, gymnastics) that are delivered by our coach from PSD.

Children also have the opportunity to take part in competitions both within school and between other schools. We enter a wide range of competitions (for example cross country, indoor sports hall, netball and tennis) that are run by Active Surrey as well as friendly competitions (for example football) against local schools.

We also have a Sports Day in the summer term, where the children take part in a variety of activities to earn points for their houses. At the end of Sports Day the points are tallied up and we have a winning house (currently subject to COVID restrictions).
